Having blogged about the 1951 NL Pennant Race and the 1967 AL Pennant Race, we now turn to one of the other great races, unless you were a Philadelphia Phillies fan at the time. The Phillies lead by 6 1/2 games over the Reds and Cardinals and 7 games over the Giants with 12 games to go in the 1964 season. The Phillies haven't won the pennant since 1950 and look assured of finally winning it this year. We will relive each of the 12 games for the Phillies, Cardinals, and Reds. Each day we will cover one day's worth of games, beginning today with September 21st. Here are the standings as play begins on September 21st.

Team W L W-L% GB
Phillies 90 60 .600 --
Cardinals 83 66 .557 6.5
Reds 83 66 .557 6.5
Giants 83 67 .553 7.0

Reds 1, Phillies 0

The Phillies are shut out at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia before 20,067 fans. John Tsitouris wins his 8th game of the year, against 11 losses, as he strikes out 8 and gives up 6 hits over a complete 9 innings. Art Mahaffey starts for Philadelphia and lasts 6 2/3 innings, giving up the only run in the game, on 6 hits. The run is scored when Chico Ruiz steals home with 2 outs in the top of the 6th inning. Bobby Locke and Bobby Shantz pitch 2 1/3 combined shutout innings in relief of Mahaffey, who takes the loss, bringing his record on the year to 12 and 9. Frank Robinson is 2 for 4 for the Reds, as is Wes Covington for the Phillies. Covington's hits are both doubles, his 17th and 18th of the year. Dick Allen also doubles, his 34th, for Philadelphia. Marty Keough doubles (8th) for the Reds, their only extra base hit. The Reds have 7 hits, 1 error, and leave 7. The Phillies have 6 hits, 0 errors, and leave 8. The Reds are 0 for 4, and the Phillies 0 for 8, with runners in scoring position. See Game

Philadelphia's lead is now 5 1/2 games over the Reds and 6 over the idle Cardinals. The Giants also lose, 3 to 1 (See Game), to the Houston Colt .45s, and stay 7 back.
