Moose Skowron Fenway Park home run

Bill "Moose" Skowron , who died yesterday, always seemed to kill the Red Sox. But, the
longest home run I've ever seen hit at Fenway was one he hit on April 20, 1957.
It was the top of the 2nd inning, and
Willard Nixon was on the mound for the Red Sox.
Skowron was batting fifth that day, directly behind
Mickey Mantle (3rd) and
Yogi Berra (4th).
The score was Yankees 1, Red Sox 0. Skowron led the inning off and hit a towering drive
over the left-center field fence, just to the right of the flag pole. The ball cleared the park
and is probably still traveling. Only 5 other players in Fenway Park's 100 years have
cleared the center field wall to the right of the flagpole. They are
Jim Rice (1975),
Hank Greenberg (1937),
Jimmie Foxx (1937),
Carl Yastrzemski (1970), and
Bobby Mitchell (1973). Skowron hit another
home run that day, in the 7th inning.
Hank Bauer actually drove in the winning runs of the
game for the Yankees with a 2-run homer in the 12th inning.
Don Larsen started for the
Yanks and only lasted 1 1 /3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits. Nixon lasted 1 2/3 innings,
giving up 3 runs on 5 hits.
