At home before 26,018, the Red Sox win their 5th in a row, as Elston Howard knocks in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th with a single. Jim Lonborg starts for the Red Sox and goes 7 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits. John Wyatt come on in the 8th in relief of Lonborg, who had allowed a leadoff double. Wyatt gets the first 2 batters he faces, but then gives up a Mike Epstein 2-run homer. He still gets credited with the win, his 7th of the year, against 5 losses. Camilo Pascual starts for the Senators and lasts 6 1/3 innings, giving up 5 runs, 3 earned, on 7 hits. Dave Baldwin pitches a scoreless 1 2/3 innings in relief of Pascual. Darold Knowles comes on in the 9th for Washington, and yields a Jerry Adair double and the Howard single. He suffers his 7th defeat of the year, against 5 victories. The White Sox win their 3rd in a row, at home, before 17,862 fans. Steve Jones starts for Chicago and goes 5 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 2 hits. He gets the win, bringing his record to 1 and 1 on the year. Hoyt Wilhelm earns his 12th save of the year, pitching 3 1/3 shutout innings. Al Downing starts for New York and lasts 4 innings, giving up 4 runs, 2 earned, on 3 hits. He suffers his 7th loss of the year, against 12 wins. Jim Bouton and Joe Verbanic pitch a combined 4 scoreless innings in relief of Downing. Chicago's Rocky Colavito belts his 8th homer of the year in the 4th inning, with 1 aboard. Charley Smith hits his 12th double of the year for the Yankees, their only extra-base hit. The White Sox have 4 hits, 1 error, and leave 2 on base. The Yankees have 6 hits, 3 errors, and leave 6.
