White Sox 4, Red Sox 1

Before 28,222 fans at Fenway Park in Boston, the White Sox defeat the Red Sox behind the pitching of Joe Horlen, who wins his 15th of the year. He goes the complete 9 innings, giving up 1 run on 6 hits. His record on the year is now 15 and 6. Jim Lonborg, looking for his 19th win for Boston, goes 7 innings, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits. Dan Osinski pitches a scoreless 2 innings on 2 hits in relief of Lonborg. Lonborg's record, with this loss, now stands at 18 and 7. Chicago scores their runs with the benefit of 3 doubles. Walt Williams, who is 3 for 5 in the game, has one of them. J.C. Martin and Rocky Colavito have the other 2-baggers. Tommy McCraw has 2 RBI's for Chicago with a 2-run single in the 1st. For Boston, Reggie Smith has his 6th triple of the year, and Ken Harrelson and Mike Andrews both double. The White Sox have 11 hits, 1 error, and leave 9 on base. Twins 5, Tigers 0

Minnesota's Dave Boswell wins his 12th game of the year before a home crowd of 29,155 at Metropolitan Stadium. He pitches a shutout, giving up 6 hits in 9 complete innings, and moves his record to 12 and 9. Denny McLain starts for Detroit, lasting 5 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, on 7 hits. Fred Gladding pitches 1 inning in relief of McLain, giving up 2 runs on 1 hit. John Hiller (1/3 inning) and Dave Wickersham (1 inning) finish up for the Tigers with no runs allowed. The only extra base hit in the game is a double by Boswell. Ted Uhlaender goes 3 for 4 for the Twins, including 3 RBI's. In combination with Boston's loss, this win allows Minnesota to recapture the AL lead. The Twins have 9 hits, 0 errors, and leave 4 on base. The Tigers have 6 hits, 1 error, and leave 5. See Game
