This is part of a series on the 1951 Dodger/Giant Pennant Race.

The 1951 National League pennant race was perhaps the most famous one of all, and culminated with the Shot Heard 'Round the World, the Bobby Thomson home run. We are posting a daily blog, exactly one year to the day, on what is now the 60th anniversary of each game.

Friday, August 3:

As a result of a Dodger win and a Giant loss yesterday, the Dodger lead as of this morning is up to 10.0 games.

Team W L W-L% GB
Dodgers 64 33 .660 --
Giants 57 46 .553 10.0

Red 5, Dodgers 4.

Under the lights in Cincinnati, the 1st-place Dodgers score 1 run in the top of the 14th inning in a 3-3 game, but the Reds beat them by scoring 2 in the bottom of the inning. Cincinnati's Willie Ramsdell pitches the full 14 innings in earning his 9th win of the year against 10 losses. He gives up 4 runs on 9 hits, striking out 10 and walking 2. Preacher Roe starts for Brooklyn and lasts 7 1/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits. Bud Podbielan, Clyde King, and Phil Haugstad combine to pitch 5 2/3 shutout innings for the Dodgers, but Ralph Branca comes on in the 14th and allows the 2 winning runs. He gives up a single, double, and 2 wild pitches in the inning, and suffers his 3rd loss of the year against 8 wins. Johnny Pramesa hits his 4th home run of the year with nobody on for the Reds. Pee Wee Reese hits a 2-run homer for the Dodgers, his 10th round-tripper of the year. In all, the Reds get 10 hits, 3 errors, and leave 8 on base. The Dodgers get 9 hits, 0 errors, and also leave 8. Cardinals 5, Giants 4
In an afternoon game in St. Louis, the Cardinals score 5 runs in the 7th inning and hold on to win after the Giants score 3 of their own in the 8th inning. St. Louis' Harry Brecheen wins his 7th game of the year (against 2 losses), giving up 4 runs on 11 hits in 7 1/3 innings pitched. Dick Bokelmann picks up his 1st save of the year pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Sal Maglie starts for New York and goes 6 1/3 innings, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits. He gets the loss, and is now 15 and 5 on the year. Monty Kennedy pitches 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Maglie. The Cardinals' Stan Musial hits a 3-run triple, his 8th 3-bagger of the year. For the Giants, Whitey Lockman also triples, his 4th of the year, and Bobby Thomson hits his 21st home run of the year, with 1 aboard. Both Lockman and Willie Mays are 3 for 4 in the game for New York. The Cardinals get 8 hits, 1 error, and leave 6 on base. The Giants get 11 hits, 0 errors, and leave 7. See Game
