The 1951 National League pennant race was perhaps the most famous one of all, and
culminated with the Shot Heard
'Round the World, the Bobby
Thomson
home
run. We are posting a daily blog, exactly one year to the day, on what is now the 60th
anniversary of each game.
Saturday, August 18:
The Giants gained 1/2 game yesterday, and as a result the Dodger lead as of game time is now 9 games.

New York's Larry Jansen improves his record to 16 and 9, as he pitches a complete game 4- hit shutout. Robin Roberts starts for Philadelphia and lasts 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits. Ken Heintzelman pitches 2 shutout innings in relief of Roberts, who suffers the loss, bringing his record to 16 and 10 on the year. New York's Willie Mays and Don Mueller both double in the game, in which Monte Irvin scores on a Roberts' wild pitch. Mueller's double drives in Eddie Stanky for the other Giants run. The Giants have 8 hits, 2 errors, and leave 9 on base. The Phillies have 4 hits, 0 errors, and leave 7. See Game
