The 1951 National League pennant race was perhaps the most famous one of all, and culminated with the Shot Heard 'Round the World, the Bobby Thomson home run. We are posting a daily blog, exactly one year to the day, on what is now the 60th anniversary of each game.
Both teams won yesterday, and as a result the Dodgers maintain a 5 game lead on the Giants. The teams exchange opponents from yesterday. The Dodgers face the Braves today in Boston. The Giants go against the Phillies in New York. Here is how the two teams stand as play begins.
Dodgers 6, Braves 1
Brooklyn's Preacher Roe goes all the way tonight in Boston, giving up 1 run on 5 hits in 9 innings pitched. He gets his 11th win against 1 loss. Johnny Sain is the losing pitcher. He goes 8 innings, giving up 5 runs, but only 1 of them earned. However, he yields 12 hits in 8 innings pitched. He loses his 9th game of the year against 4 wins. Bob Chipman finishes up for the Braves, pitching 1 inning and giving up 1 run. For the Dodgers, Gil Hodges hits a home run, his 25th of the year, with 1 on. Pee Wee Reese goes 3 for 5 in the game. Hodges and Jackie Robinson each have 2 RBI's in the game. The Braves have 2 errors, the Dodgers none. See Game
Giants 4, Phillies 3
The Giants beat the Phillies tonight in New York behind the pitching of Jim Hearn, who gets his 7th win of the year against 5 losses. He gives up 3 runs on 8 hits in 7 1/3 innings. George Spencer finishes up for New York. Ken Heintzelman loses for the Phils, his 8th loss against 3 wins, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings pitched. Bob Miller pitches 2 innings for Philadelphia, giving up 0 runs in the effort. Bobby Thompson hits his 11th home run of the year. Andy Seminick and Dick Sisler both homer for the Phillies. Neither team commits an error in the game. See Box Score. Plays by Play not available.
Tomorrow: Giants win in dramatic fashion against Phils. Brooklyn's Johnny Schmitz goes up against Braves.
