50 Greatest Yankee Moments. July 19 and September 8, 1940. Buddy Rosar and Joe Gordon both hit for the cycle in the same year.

On July 19, Buddy Rosar, the backup catcher for the Yankees, hits for the cycle, and is not retired
in 5 at-bats. He does it in Yankee Stadium against the Cleveland Indians. He triples in the
1st, singles in the 2nd, homers in the 4th, doubles in the 6th, and walks in the 8th. The
Yankees win the game, 15-6, sweeping the Indians in the 3-game series. The identical feat is repeated on September 8th
by another Yankee, Joe Gordon. He does it at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. He homers in the 1st inning, singles in the 2nd, triples in the 4th, doubles in the 5th (completing the cycle in 5 innings), and walks in the 8th. The Yankees win this game, 9-4, and Boston, now 5 games out, with only 20 to play, is effectively eliminated from the pennant race.
