I was 10 years old and with my brother took a couple of streetcars from Albany Park to Wrigley, we had to get off 4 blocks from Clark & Addison because of the big crowd. There were 47,000 fans and 99% bought their tickets on the day of the game in cash(no credit cards then). Many fans brought binoculars to get a closer look at Jackie Robinson who was making his Chicago debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The only booing I recall was for Dixie Walker. There were no fire laws then, so many sat in the isles and stood by the back fences in the grandstands, upper decks and the bleachers. Ironically, it was the 3rd game I went to that season.. the Opener against the Pirates and Hank Greenberg's 2 out double in the 6th drove in the games only run. We were there for Babe Ruth Day 4/27/47 and the Babe's speech from Yankee stadium was piped in over the P.A. system. It was hard to understand... but I knew I was hearing Babe Ruth. I've been to way over 1,000 Cubs games.
