I attended this game and I never understood what the official ruling was that ended the game. It was raining pretty hard, and trailing by 5 in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, the Cubs hit a couple balls that would have been outs, but were misplayed due to the weather. Henry Blanco reached to load the bases, and then the umpires "called" the game without a third out being recorded.

It was absolutely the right decision in that situation, but I don't understand the legality of the ruling. If there are no lead changes in the current inning and a game is called due to rain, it is my understanding that the game ends and the final reverts to the end of the previous full inning. In that case, it should have been an 8 inning game with the Cardinals winning 6-0. How can the stats from the 9th inning count, yet no third out recorded in the bottom of the 9th? How can the winning team pitch 8-2/3 innings? I've always wanted to know this. Thanks!
