I attended this doubleheader. The play that Larry Stahl made to end the 7th inning of game one was a sensational circus catch in right center. The Mets led 7-0 when the Reds came up to hit. Pete Rose knocked in Lee May to make it 7-1, and then Tony Perez followed with a 2-run shot. The Reds eventually loaded the bases with two outs when the great (and underrated) Vada Pinson drove the ball to deep right center where Stahl made a diving catch on the warning track. Had Stahl not made the play, three runs would have scored easily. There was a lengthy argument by Dave Bristol and the next day's local papers ran a photo that supposedly showed Stahl had dropped the ball. Baseball Digest did a year-end feature in which they selected each team's finest defensive play and Stahl's was selected as the Mets'.
