I understand why Adcock was called out for passing Aaron on the base path between 2nd and 3rd, and only credited with a double instead of a homer. But why wasn't Aaron called out for leaving the base path after rounding 2nd?

According to the above site, Adcock hit a ball to center that Virdon could not field and got a double. I listened to the last two innings on KDKA radio and according to BobPrince the Pittsburgh announcer, Adcock hit a ball to right field but the right fielder got a glove on the ball but it fell over the chain link fence. Adcock was declared out because when Aaron reached second he believed that the ball had fallen in the field of play and he returned to the Braves dugout. Therefore, when Aaron realized his mistake and tried to return to 2nd base so Adcock could get credit for the 3 run homer, he could not do it because once the winning run crossed the plate and Aaron was passed by Adcock, the game was over. For many years, Haddix was credited with a perfect 12 inning game, but his name was removed from the list of perfrect game pitchers because a runner reached base in the 13th.
