I was at this game when I was 13 years old on a family trip traveling from Tampa, Florida to California and back. We stopped to watch the game. In the 10th inning, Matty Alou was walked. The infielders all met at the mound with the pitcher and catcher to plan their defense, but failed to call timeout. Alou broke for second and the pitcher spun and threw the ball to second ... but there was no one there, since the 2nd baseman and shortstop were both at the mound. Alou rounded third and beat the throw to the plate from the outfield.

The Dodgers did try to get Alou after failing to call time, but pitcher Pete Mikkelsen threw the ball wildly to second, and then second baseman Jim Lefebvre also made a misplay. Or so says the Sporting News (August 21 1971, page 32)

I heard this game on the radio (KMOX). I seems Matty Alou walked with 1 out in the bottom of the 10th inning and stole second but proceeded to circle the bases while the Dodger in- fielders stood at the mound and forgot to call time out. The division was decided by one game, the Giants nosed out the Dodgers by this one game.
